A group of seven alleged members of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was responsible for attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
